Android - can I connect 3G and Wi-Fi at the same time?

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to simultaneously open Wi-Fi and 3g connection on Android?

Is there a way to control access to Wifi and 3G / GPRS data connections and use them simultaneously?

At the moment, it seems that the OS will close the 3G data connection when Wi-Fi is activated.

For some applications, it would be very nice to notify the OS that they want to use only the 3G network. This will reduce the loss of data connectivity due to exiting and entering poor Wi-Fi connections.
