Do you use a grid system when designing a web page?

I am trying to understand why I will use the grid. I read some, but I just do not understand. I'm used to just putting the material in html on the page and doing it, but I have a new project and you want to use the grid, because this is apparently the best practice.

I read in one article, mentioned in another SO question, and said that mesh design was in all kinds of design, even when developing the application form. It made me think of things like grid snap, etc., and I didn't know if the grid in the web design area was the same. I was hoping that someone could give me a short, but not too complicated presentation, and not a link to Google, which I already used.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: I found this site the easiest: http://www.zurb.com/playground/css-grid-builder , but again, what should I do with 12 columns? Is everything in the column β€œbroken” to fit into the column? it doesn't make sense to me.

EDIT: I read the 960 series tutorial below and felt better, but in the end he says:

You can also use the Grid 960 concepts in production code, but it is not recommended that you stick to the wireframe all the way through production. CSS structures are like any tool, they use them. With that in mind, go ahead and prototype!

I'm not trying to get this out of context, but if I don't use it in production, what's the point? I understand the need for prototyping, but if I like the prototype, why not use the 960 grid? I can not understand this comment. Thanks.

EDIT:

Is the system 960 for production?

I think you are too focused on thinking about grids for web applications and applications, and you need to do a little research on why grids can be useful for any form of graphic and information design, be it pixels on the screen or manual ones. ink on paper.

I would recommend you take a step back from the computer, forget about 960, divs, snap-to-grid and the whole HTML and, if possible, look through a few graphic books and magazines and make a little scribble. Or just pick up a newspaper and think about which subsystems they use (how many columns are there, they have the same width, the grids differ in pages or sections, what elements are attached to the grid that diverge from it?).

The Grid System has a good list of resources.

Then you should be in a better position to think about how shared resources can be useful for your projects and whether a specific model such as the 960 grid can be useful.

When I design any user interface / web design, I don't pay attention to the grid layout until I start creating my basic elements. as soon as this is done, I will implement the grid to interact perfectly with these basic elements for easy visual scanning.
