An old question, but there are several tools for this. The existing answers here provide amazing recommendations if you just need to actively search for a request / response.

If you need to automatically check the response of an HTTP response, you can use my tool: https://assertible.com . With this, you can customize the requests and make “statements” in the response. If the response is not as expected, you can set up alerts to receive notifications.

There are, of course, many other ways to approach this. For something more manual, I would recommend Chrome Dev Tools or, for Firefox, Firebug, as mentioned in another answer.

Not the specific tools you are looking for, but I highly recommend checking out tcpdump and / or wireshark packet analyzers if you use any kind of network programming. The latter has the function "Follow TCP Stream" to view bytes passing through the TCP channel.
