Powerbuilder Resources

I recently worked for a company where we use PowerBuilder extensively. The only documentation or resources that we have access to is some basic course that says things like "Do A, then B, and you get C". I was wondering if there are any better crash courses or study guides for this language online or elsewhere that actually explains something instead of just taking my hand.

β€œBetter” sounds intimidating, because it's hard to say how your learning style works and what is best for you. (I think I like the ABC approach.) So, instead of listing things that will hit or skip, I will try one resource that has both quantity and quality. PowerBuilder Developer Magazine has a large online archive of old and fairly recent articles on the Internet. (The current problem quickly enters the network, but I would not dare to guess how fast.) Like any technical magazine, the quality of articles can vary, but IMHO remains quite high on average. They will vary in scope from speculation to the intimidation of detailed instructions on how to achieve very specific goals. I'm not sure if this is a great place to start, but it is a good place to go as soon as you drag your way through the ABC tutorial in PowerBuilder tutorials.

Good luck

Terry.

Unfortunately, for PB there is no special work in comparison with other languages. Here are some useful resources on the Internet:

  • When I wrote PB, I found Google Groups - a great resource for finding information about specific problems with PowerBuilder code.

  • Terry Voth launches a website called Sequel Sandbox , which has many useful PowerBuilder resources. It is also on StackOverflow, so maybe it can listen to additional information :)

One thing we did was that any new PB developers run the tutorial that comes with PB (Disclaimer: we had a corporate version, I'm not sure that all versions of PB come with the same tutorial) . Anyway, it was a great way to get started and explore your path around the IDE.

Do not forget about books. Most PowerBuilder 9: Advanced Client / Server Development is still used. And if you can find a copy of a book, such as PowerBuilder 7, you can get most of the PowerScript syntax.

You look at the things that Jacob Verde does:

He is a former Sybase training guy, and one of them has conducted many training sessions at Sybase TechWave.

There are several resources on this subject for learning PowerBuilder .

I have many PowerBuilder bookmarks on Delicous.com. Some of these materials may be helpful.

The key to Powerbuilder is Datawindow. One of the best books written on this subject is Richard Brooks' Ultimate DataWindow. It's 11 years old, but it is still the best resource for data information.

You can find it on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-DataWindow-Your-PowerBuilder-Success/dp/020170224X

PowerBuilder is used to create PowerBuilder Foundation (PFC) classes, but they discontinued it. PFC lives on, though as an open source project here:

http://pfc.codeplex.com/

For older versions of Powerbuilder (8, 9, and 10), this site has some sample code and DLLs. As other developers have mentioned, you'll find yourself everywhere looking for help.
