Linux HA / cluster: what are the differences between pacemaker, Heartbeat, Corosync, wackamole?

Can you help me understand Linux HA?

  • Pacemaker, Heartbeat, Corosync seem to be part of the whole HA stack, but how do they fit together?
  • How is wackamole different from Pacemaker / Heartbeat / Corosync? I have seen opinions that wackamole is better than Heartbeat because it is peer based. It's really?
  • The latest release of wackamole was 2.5 years ago. Is it supported or actively?
  • What do you recommend to configure HA for web application / database servers?

Depends on which application uses the HA, MySQL configuration? Cluster file system?

I would recommend which HA redhat settings are used in their cluster tools. They usually know which package is best for the general case. Accord to this is a heartbeat, however Planet HA has interesting articles depending on what type of stack you are setting up.
