Is there a definitive guide for special folders in windows?

Is there a definitive guide for special folders in windows? An Internet search yielded just a few bits of information, for example.

What I'm looking for is an explanation of each folder, its purpose, usage scenarios and motivation for its existence (for example, the local application settings for these application settings are not used). I think I will need a matrix / requirements / application table against the folder.
