Can I verify the code for the Google Chrome extension before installing it?

Google Chrome extensions are a great invention, but they can potentially interact with a lot of user information .

Can I view their manifest and / or their source code before installing them?

The reason I ask about this in StackOverflow is because I just developed my first extension. Since it manipulates the CSS style for the websites you visit, before installation it will tell you:

"This extension will have access to browsing history and personal data on all sites."

Pretty scary ... I can imagine that many users do not install the extension just because of this message. I would be very happy to show them what my extension does, and how safe it is ...

Google Chrome extensions are zip files with a different extension and some metadata. If you rename them to a ZIP file and extract, you can get the Javascript code and HTML behind them.

See the documentation for more information.

Unfortunately, just because the user can view the source code does not mean that they will understand it.

It looks like you can create a description for your extension. Let users know about your extension there (they see when they look at the extensions site), publish your code somewhere and contact it :)
