How to add a number to the launch icon, for example, via HTC mail?

Does anyone know how to add a circular icon with a number inside it (indicating the number of unread messages) to the launch application, for example, the HTC mail application? I know how to do this for notifications, but not for the launch icon.

To clarify, this is not a widget, but an application icon.

@glenviewjeff: This sounds like normal behavior that HTC hacked into the [launcher] OS.
