Interact programmatically with connected iOS / iPods in OSX 10.6

I am trying to develop a simple menu bar that will allow me to visualize the charging status of my connected iPhone / iPad without having to launch iTunes. After a long search, I can’t conclude if this is possible with the Snow Leopard API.

My search led me to a service running at boot time called com.apple.ipodserver, but I cannot find any public API surrounding it.

Is my idea realistic?

There are several iphone utilities on MAC and Windows, but most of them interact with your iphone file system. I think you need to write one application that will work on your iphone and provide an interface to your application. mac and your Mac application will use the data from this interface ... for example, your iphone application can create a txt file and update the battery charge status in it, and your Mac application can read this file so simple
