Alternatives to Microsoft Project Open Source

I was recommended to use the Microsoft project as a project manager in my course. But being an open source fan and Linux user, which one would be the best alternative to Open Source.

I saw this question: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/109579/open-source-alternative-to-microsoft-project , which suggests using openproj. The latest version of Openproj was released 2 years ago, so I thought differently.

Also, following a wiki comparing project management software , I learned that there are many open source alternatives. Some software on the list with the maximum features that I discovered is:

Can anyone recommend what is the best (or most popular) alternative.

Update

Finally, looking at various project management programs, I found out that the solution for one completely depends on your needs. The only thing that works all over the place is Pen and paper , as indicated in this answer.

Your two favorites are missing from your list:

  • Pen and paper
  • .txt

and I don’t mean it as a joke! These are simple tools, but they have certain advantages for them. They have limitations in what you can track with them, and therefore you only track what is important. Take it as a minimalist approach to project management if you want.

All in all, I am not inclined to think that you can manage GANTT or PERT software development and resources. Most software developments are creative and implement those things that have not been tested before. Therefore, the problems you must solve have a high risk of failure when you must try again. I believe that GANTT and friends are best if you have a large number of known low-risk tasks.

You cannot believe that this is true, but then I beg you to at least take into account my point of view when you track the project in detail. Especially if you suddenly need to update the GANTT schedule due to misses.
