What would be nice, Windows and iis (http) based distributed version control system

At my work, we make and sell sites. We usually install our site on .NET C # on a client server and support and support it remotely. However, from time to time, for larger developments and just to simplify (and faster!), We will copy the site to a local server.

This is great, but it has one pain - moving the site back to the client. Now, if nothing has changed on the client copy - no problem. However, it is the sad truth that at one time (read more often than you would like), some corrections were necessary for application on a production server. Either because the client needed NOW, or simply because it was a major mistake.

I know that you can easily apply these bug fixes to a local copy, but this is an error prone process. So I rely on distributed version control to help synchronize the two copies.

This is what I need:

  • Easy to install - nothing else is required, except for the rights of the installer and administrator.
  • It can integrate into an existing website as a virtual directory and work on port 80 - without the hassle of a new DNS.
  • Great software

What is it. Any ideas?

Some comments on the answers

First of all, thanks! very grateful.

I looked at Mercurial and Bazaar, and both looked very good. The only caveat is installing as a virtual directory in IIS. As far as I understand, Mercurial uses a special protocol (wire) and Bazaar and add python extensions. Is there another system that integrates more easily with IIS? I am ready to take a performance hit for it.

I would look at Mercurial or Bazaar . I was told that Git also works on windows, but I suspect that the Windows port is still the second class port at best.

You will probably need to run python scripts on your web server to host any of them.

It may not be exactly what you are requesting, but you can check out DeltaCopy , which is a version of Windows rsync . You can also read about another rsync solution here

I can also vouch for Mercurial. Easy to use and powerful to download!
