Early support in languages ββlike PHP was also relevant. Although the MySQL C API is relatively straightforward (assuming convenient callback management), the PHP implementation made it crazy crazy to use. Some argue that they are too easy to use.
I worked in the hosting industry for a long time and noted trends. Almost immediately after adding PHP support for SQLite3, people started asking to install it. I'm not saying that PHP is the only factor that can help, and I canβt guess how much it was a factor, but it had something to do with it.
After all, they call it LAMP for some reason.
