How to import letters in thunderbird from maildir format

I have a local imap server that is used to pull emails from an external mail server and distribute mail locally. This server is now used by the sngle user, as it is more convenient for other users to use an account hosted on the gmail website. I want to close this local mail server, but this user has older emails in the mail server. Can I import all emails from an IMAP server into a local installation of a thunderbird user? My goal is to shut down the IMAP server, but allow the user to access older email messages. Any solution?

Head to your workstation, enable the option "save local copies" (whatever it is called ...), slurp all messages down, and then immediately turn off your imapd to do with it.

Another option that friends used was to move the entire maildir heap to his machine, install dovecot on it to serve maildir, and target his client to the local dovecot installation.

There is an import-export extension for Thunderbird http://www.nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html

Rename files to complete with .eml (extension) using mmv, which is available on FreeBSD, Mac OS X (Macports) and [your favorite distribution] Linux.

Create a new folder and just work with the context menu "Import all EML files from the directory."

Voila
