Are protobuf messages supported in protobuf versions?

I started building an application with protobuf 2.2.0 since it was the last. Now I am considering upgrading to protobuf 2.4.0a, which is the latest. If I do this, messages created by one version of the application can still be read by another version for the same scheme? Or am I breaking something?

That should be good. Version 2.1.0 introduced completed duplicate fields, but I do not believe that since then there have been changes to the wiring format.
