Just a question ... For example, I want to develop a payroll system for a business. Is it legal to use SQL Server Express Edition?

As shown on MSDN , you can use SQL Server Express Edition in a production environment, but you must consider some technical limitations:

  • maximum 1 processor, up to 4 cores allowed
  • maximum usable memory (per instance of SQL Server Database Engine) 1 GB
  • maximum relational database size 10 GB
