Donation options in the app. Are any of these allowed?

Are any of these options allowed to accept donations through the iPhone app without “losing” 30% of Apple’s money?

  • A button that links to a web page that accepts donations with credit card payments?
  • Instructions on how to donate by sending an SMS?
  • Call IVR, where you can bill people who donate by phone.

2014 - please note that all answers here are out of date for years.

2014 - I hope someone publishes updated facts.

I am sure that you are not allowed to do this at this time - although these policies often change.

If you are interested in spam, donations (whatever that means) or viruses, then this “Android system” that Google launched to allow such things is exactly what you are looking for.

Sorry, I was wrong, you are currently allowed to do this:

21. Charity and Contributions

21.1 Applications that include the ability to donate to recognized charities should be free
21.2 Donation collection must be done via Safari website or SMS

This is the answer, April 2011. You must use one of the two methods in 21.2.

From what I know, Apple does not allow the inclusion of a donation button in the application. AppMakr quotes: “Apple tends to decline Applications containing content related to donations or charity. We have issued you a REMOVED coupon that will allow you to restore the application for free, minus the donation tab.”
