Debugging Mobile Websites

A website running in a regular desktop browser, such as Firefox , can be debugged using Firebug .

Similary, are there any tools that can be used to debug mobile versions of websites running in browsers such as Fennec, Opera Mobile , etc.

In most cases, it is better to use your favorite browser and try to simulate the behavior of a mobile device. You can use Firefox Add-Ons, for example:

  • User Agent Switch: to fake various mobile User Agents (already supplied with several predefined mobile agents).
  • Change headers: fake some additional HTTP headers that are sometimes needed (x-wap-profile, x-msisdn, Accept)

And, of course, your favorite add-ons for debugging and development

You can check out JS Console

and weinre

Both allow remote debugging of js web applications, even on mobile devices

Unfortunately, heiko, this is not entirely true. For example, desktop browsers do not have touch events. And I know that in the case of Opera, the rendering mechanism of the mobile version is slightly behind the desktop version.

[Disclosure: I work for Opera.] Opera Dragonfly has a built-in remote debugging feature. Opera Mobile must be installed on your computer and Opera on your computer. Your computer must also allow connections on port 7001.

If you have me (Pod || Pad || Phone), try Bugaboo.

JSConsole, Hatch noted, is also a good option.

Despite the fact that it does not work directly on the device, the WebKit developer tools are very useful for debugging mobile websites.

http://farjs.com , e.g. http://jsconsole.com removed the debugging console for HTML and JS and works great on mobile devices.
