Alternative to Android Emulators

I am completely unfamiliar with the development of Android, but I only got HTC Hero and would like to develop several applications for it. However, I use the laptop as my development machine, and the emulator is very slow. It took about 10-15 minutes to boot, and although I can leave it, it usually slows down the system when using other applications (for example, web browser / Eclipse IDE, etc.). What is the best way for an Android phone? I could just plug in HTC and constantly download the new APK, but it just seems like too long a process to check for minor changes. Are there any other methods for debugging applications, or will I have to dare on an emulator until I get a new system? Thanks

Using your HERO is the way to go. Downloading the APK and starting the program after each change will take only a few seconds. If you do not have emulators and HERO is connected (with the USB SDK driver for Android installed), Eclipse will automatically select HERO as the target machine.

You can really just download the application on your phone and check it; this is what i do quite often.

Pressing Ctrl + Shift + F11 in Eclipse will automatically compile the application, download the APK to the current device, which it will find (be it an emulator or a phone), and then launch the application.

It takes about seven seconds with my HTC Hero and Dev machine (which admittedly is pretty fast, but since Eclipse usually compiles in the background, most of the time it takes to install on the phone).

I don't know much about Android-specific development, but do you write and use tests? If you, you can test a lot of logic without loading the emulator, if you have the right configuration methods to simulate the environment.

The emulator or device will then be used to verify the GUI settings or device-specific functions. If this is what you are mostly testing right now, then no, I do not believe that there is another solution.
