Is there a human-accessible and textual representation of the component diagram?

I am looking for a textual representation of a component diagram that does the following:

  • A person can read and understand the chart simply by looking at the text.
  • Text can be displayed on a chart.
  • Plain. No fancy features. Mostly only boxes, arrows and tags are needed.

Here is a great example of what I'm looking for, but with sequence diagrams: http://www.websequencediagrams.com/

Is there such a language / format for component diagrams?

You can use plantuml . It can display component diagrams from text as you want. To create charts, you need to install Graphviz . Sample text for UML:

@startuml DataAccess - [First Component] [First Component] ..> HTTP : use @enduml

There are other UML textual notations, you can check them here .

I use yUML most of the time. He does what you need, and it's simple enough. They do not have an API as such, but you can easily create diagrams with URLs or POST.

You can also place it on your servers by purchasing a license.

You can try the UMLet utility.

"UMLet is a free, open-source UML tool with a simple user interface: quickly draw UML diagrams, create sequence and activity diagrams from plain text."
