Is it possible to find out the source (e.g. Google Play) of an Android application?

Can I check if the application is installed on the Android market (Google Play Store) or in other ways?

Basically, I want to know if the application is genuine or not. If the source for installing the application is the Play Store, then we know that the application named com.dropbox.android is the actual Dropbox application, but if the source is not the Play Store, anyone can create an Android application with the same package name and install it on the device .

This may be the same question as in How do I know if an application is installed from a Google game or from side loading? Try to check if the solution you provided works.

I am not sure if there is a way to detect this. However, for security reasons, I suggest that you always disable Unknown sources in the Security or Development sections of the Settings section to avoid installing non-market applications.
