Nano 2.0.6 - Saving Mac File

Any ideas on how to save a file edited with Nano in the "Mac format"? I keep getting DOS carriage returns to my recently saved files on my Linux box. I took a screenshot of the bottom menu when I go to the โ€œwrite outโ€ file:

Mac MM format ??? I see that there are save options when saving, but I canโ€™t figure out how to implement them.

The command "MM" means "alt M". In fact, any command starting with "M" means an alt key. Some keyboards gobble up the alt key: in my case on the Macbook Pro Retina, โ€œescโ€ followed by โ€œMโ€ is what worked. More details here .

However, since your screenshot shows [DOS Format] as the current selection, the key combination you really want is "alt D" (or "esc" followed by "D"). This will disable [DOS Format] so that you save the file with the default line termination character (ASCII 0xA). Turning on [Mac Format] will just give you a new set of problems.

Usually you do not want to save in DOS or Mac format. On Linux, you should prefer the Unix format, theforefore:

  • enter file name
  • press Enter

and the file will be saved using the final Unix lines by default (what you need on Linux):

No Mac format. Mac OS X is UNIX.
