Why is version number in version control not increasing by 1 all the time?

When I use "svn log", for example, to view the change history, I believe that the version number does not increment one after the other all the time. For example, one revision has a version number of "1234", but its next version has a version number of "1256" instead of "1235". What happens between these two versions? What revision numbers are not consistent?

Thanks.

Your project in the SVN repository may not be the only one. Any revision in any part of the SVN repo will increase the global version number by one. See also:

If you get the log from the root of your repository, you will see that the version number is incremented one by one. BUT, you get a journal from a subdirectory of your repo. This means that there are many changes that do not apply to your subdirectory.
