Dojo build profile.layers vs. profile.dependencies.layers?

Wow, this is totally confusing, and the dojo 1.8 documentation seems like a complete cluster f ** k around assembly layers. Does anyone know what is going on there?

In the sample assembly profile scripts, the amd.profile.js example has profile.layers ["dojo / dojo"] and the tutorial follows this syntax.

Aside from the tutorial, there is no mention of this structure in the 1.8 build documentation , but profile.dependencies. layers [n] .

The documentation also refers to non-AMD syntax and simply adds another β€œlevel” of confusion, as well as profile.dependencies.layers [n] .dependencies .

What should i use? Is it documented anywhere with any consistency or clarity?

I found out that the Dojo 1.8 reference manual contains outdated information about build profiles, but that the Dojo 1.8 Build current tutorial:

http://dojotoolkit.org/documentation/tutorials/1.8/build/

This tutorial recommends this blog post for more information on building plans and optimization: http://www.sitepen.com/blog/2012/06/11/dgrid-and-dojo-nano-build/
