JavaScript Animation Library ... Recommendation

I am interested in opinions / recommendations for people in the real world for a small, stand-alone JavaScript animation library. Thus, there is no need for a complete JavaScript library such as jQuery, dojo, etc.

Notes:
- NO HTML5 canvas-oriented libraries, please (e.g. processing.js).
- Support for Css3 is a bonus, but not required.
β€œThe more effective the better!”
β€œIf you so wish, let me and others find out why you recommended what you recommended.”

Thanks.

I would highly recommend the GreenSock Animation Platform .

Although I didn't have to use a standalone javascript solution, this library was invaluable for any actioncript animation work.

They have a very well-structured library that supports all kinds of plug-ins.

The main animation library is incredibly fast.

It seems rather strange that you rule out solutions based on canvas with a bat. It is designed (and works great) for this.

Anyway, there is a way of animating using the DOM, which is really good for backward compatibility, but is a pretty secret technique. Annoyingly, I recently read a good article about this, but can't find it now. I will say that you are unlikely to find modern gfx js libraries that do not use canvas.
