EnabledRemoteNotificationTypes returns wrong value on ios 6.0.1 ipod

Question

We check if APNs are allowed using the enabledRemoteNotificationTypes method using UIApplication. This is great for iPhone with iOS 6 and below. However, on an iPod with iOS 6.0.1, the method continues to return 0, indicating that APN types are not enabled, even if APNs were manually enabled in iPod settings.

This happens after the APNs are first manually disabled on the device for this application.

Has anyone else seen this? And do you have any tips on how to deal with this?
