64-bit for 32-bit for Windows

I just downloaded my new Windows 8 laptop all day with all my dev tools. Just to find out that my OS version was a 32-bit version.

When I tried to run the emulator for my Windows Phone 8 application, I got the error message “I need“ Hyper-V. ”Apparently,“ Hyper-V ”is only available in the 64-bit version.

I have a two-part question. How can I use my current 32-bit OS and developer tools? From what I'm reading, I can still check with a registered phone. Any info on how to do this?

Another question: will I bite a bullet now and upgrade to a 64-bit OS (which is reformatting and reinstalling everything)?

I would bite a bullet and upgrade it to 64 bits. Full system requirements for developing Windows Phone 8 are here . Besides the need to use the 64-bit version of Windows 8 Pro or later to use the Windows Phone 8 emulator, another "gotcha" needs a processor that supports second level address translation (SLAT).

PCs that support SLAT are Intel-based processors that start with me (for example, i3, i5, i7, i9) or any processors based on Nehalem, Westmere or Sandybridge microarchives.

To determine if your machine supports SLAT, follow these steps:

If you use a Windows Phone 8 device, you can “unlock” it and deploy and debug applications in it so that you can store a 32-bit OS.

Otherwise, you need to format and install the 64-bit version of Windows 8.
