Blink-cursor-mode with a nice blink?

Flashing cursors can be very annoying. It's easy to switch blinking using blink-cursor-mode (or maybe tweak it ...). But with large screens it is often difficult to find the cursor position. So alright, blinking may make sense in the end.

However, what is visually very annoying is that blinking occurs by switching between a full rectangle (or bar) and nothing. When you now compare Cx 3 as two buffers side by side, the selected buffer sometimes has a rectangle, and sometimes not. Thus, you cannot easily look to the side, and then to the other; you need to wait until the cursor appears again. This is very annoying.

So my question is: is it possible to blink to switch between a full rectangle and something related? Better color rectangle? It should not be a hollow rectangle because it is used in another buffer.

(I use 23.1)

This is possible from 24.1 on.

blink-cursor-alist allows you to specify for each on-type a off-type .

Thanks @RobertHarvey for pointing this out.
