Basically looking for a function similar to Total Commander filter-as-you-type.
Not a quick search suitable for your needs? If I'm not mistaken, alt + s will show a “quick search” in Midnight Commander, but cannot check it right now.
Hide the command line from the options menu, alt + s will automatically show if the type is char.
