SASS: Convert RGB to RGBa

I set up the colors of my project like this:

$blue: rgb(75, 179, 209); 

Is it possible to use this variable and convert the value to RGB elsewhere as needed?

You can

 $blue: rgb(75, 179, 209); body { background:rgba($blue, .5); }
