The problem becomes more noticeable as I would like to update monodevelop, but not mono, but I cannot choose which Xamarin updates will be installed.
The Upgrade dialog box does not allow you to select a specific package to upgrade. Regarding the automatic removal of Mono runtimes, this is a known bug reported here .
Am I missing something? Is there a way to manage updates other than manually downloading and installing as it seems that autoupdate is broken for me?
I usually update manually: download the latest version of MonoDevelop and overwrite the old Applications folder. It takes a few clicks, but it's safer. I also do the same for FSharpBinding: go to Add-in Manager --> F# Language Binding and click Update .
Now I have returned the update: is there a way to use my existing monodevelop or do I need to reinstall it (the same problem remains even after installing mono 3.0.3)?
Suppose autoupdate gives you a new MonoDevelop and erases Mono 3.0.3. After reinstalling Mono 3.0.3, you need to install Preferences --> .NET runtimes --> Mono 3.0.3 by default, and possibly uninstall and reinstall FSharpBinding. You do not need to reinstall MonoDevelop again.
However, be careful with the autoupdate function. If you are not sure that all updates (Mono, MonoDevelop, FSharpBinding) are correct, do not do this.
