Migrating from TFS 2010 to TFS 2012

I searched the Internet for a clear solution on how to transfer our tfs 2010 collections to our new tfs 2012 server, but no luck. Can someone please help with the steps or a good blog that I could look at to achieve this. The reason we want to do MIGRATION and not upgrade is because we got new hardware and would like to test TFS 2012 first before updating our environment. Therefore, we would like to import our entire collection, including work items, and create process templates.

You can move the collection at the same time using the disconnect option in 2010 and attach it to 2012 using the attach option.

Here is a decent blog post: http://mohamedradwan.wordpress.com/2013/01/05/upgrade-tfs-2010-to-tfs-2012-with-migration-to-a-new-hardware-series/

The following are the basic steps you want to complete:

  • Back up all of your 2010 databases.
  • Restore these databases on SQL Server on your new hardware.
  • Install TFS 2012 on your new hardware
  • When the time comes for tuning. Select an upgrade option.
  • He will ask where your databases are. Select the SQL Server that you used in # 2.
  • Click "Go."

Please note that if you want to test 2012 with the same clients that you use in 2010, then you will need to "clone" the system, otherwise your clients will be confused. For this, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/ee349259.aspx
