MPMoviePlayerController and local m3u8 files

I am trying to download an m3u8 file that is saved on the local file system, but MPMoviePlayerController refuses to play it, citing the fact that "m3u8 does not support media type." However, the same m3u8 file plays perfectly when I access it on a remote media server. Is there a workaround that can be used to play local m3u8 files?

Well, according to the RFCs that they post for m3u8 streaming, this can only be done via HTTP. Personally, I think it is foolish to require HTTP when files can be easily accessed through the file protocol, but they are interruptions. I just used a simple HTTP server to work with the m3u8 file and subsequent ts files.
