How to copy tab delimited text to clipboard from unix shell while saving tabs?

I am trying to copy and paste several lines of a file from a UNIX environment into a web page. I want to keep the original tab-breaking formatting. However, when I select a block of text and copy and paste it into a web page, all the tabs have been converted to different runs of spaces.

Can someone please tell me what can I do to keep the original tabs? It should be as simple as possible so that novice users can do the same!

thanks

Based on your comment that there are no tabs in the text you are copying, I suspect that the ptty you used converted them for you. I suspect that if you run "stty tabs", you may get the behavior you are looking for (disabling the tab extension in ptty).
