The difference between XeLaTeX and pdfLaTeX

The name reads it all, I suppose. Both commands ( pdflatex and xelatex ) generate a PDF file. What is technical / effective / historical / etc. the difference between the two teams? I am using TeX Live.

PdfTeX and XeTeX and the equivalent commands for latex are two implementations for the same purpose that you have already indicated. Wikipedia articles contain more information about history and development.

One of the main differences from the operating point is that XeTeX has better font support - in particular, you can use system fonts, not just text fonts. It also has better support for non-Latin character encodings.
