What are the letters on the right side of the popup autocomplete?

For example, what does ā€œaā€ and ā€œdā€ mean in this screenshot?

(A bit about background details: I'm using Emacs 24.3 on OS X 10.8.3, and the corresponding completion library ends with auto-complete )

an image of a table in auto-complete's documentation, mapping each symbol to its meaning

The letters of the mnemonics, indicating why auto-complete considers a particular candidate worthy of your consideration. In the screenshot, many candidates have a ā€œdā€ next to them, because they come from the dict project file for Python mode . "A" for abbrev ... but I can't say much more because I haven't used abbrev yet.

In any case, you can learn more by studying ac-define-source , both your documentation and its documentation .
