Connect to visualstudio.com from Team Explorer Everywhere CLC

I am trying to connect from the Team Explorer Everywhere command line on Windows to the Team Foundation Service project on visualstudio.com, but I am getting access denied messages.

The username and password that I pass is definitely correct, and is the email and password from my Microsoft Live Live ID used to create the account. I have no problem accessing the service through a website or through Visual Studio 2012 on another machine.

tf workspace /new /server:https://<something>.visualstudio.com/defaultcollection Username: example@microsoft.com Password: ********

Any ideas? I thought that maybe the @ symbol in the email made the username be interpreted as a Windows domain, or that maybe SSL was used incorrectly?

You cannot authenticate using Live ID using the Team Explorer Everywhere command-line client. We can’t lift the web browser from the client and fix Live ID authentication tokens in a safe way on different platforms.

Instead, you need to set up alternative credentials, as described in https://tfs.visualstudio.com/en-us/home/news/2012/aug-27/ .

If someone received this error after March 18, 2014, this is because the password requirements for visualstudio.com have been tightened.

If you suddenly receive this message "Failed to delete credentials: item not found fatal: Authentication failed for 'https: //*.visualstudio.com/defaultcollection/_git/*/' '

I was able to solve this problem by deleting my alternate credentials and re-creating them (after which I also found out that my old password is no longer used).
