Set the background color / Inkscape workspace template to distinguish transparency

How to set the appearance of the background area in Inkscape so that I can distinguish between an image with a white background and an image with a transparent background?

Many other image viewers / editors have a checkered background for this purpose, but I could not find anything like it for Inkscape.

In InkScape 0.48:

File> Document Properties> Page> General> Background

Move R, G, and B to 0. Set A (Alpha) to your preference (experiment to your liking).

Please note that this approach sets the color that you choose as the background for the saved / exported image.

InkScape 0.92:

File> Document Properties> Page> General> Background> Checkerboard Background

Starting with version 0.92 (January 2017), you can choose a checkered background. This will not affect the background of the saved image, but will override the background shown in InkScape.

A small clarification of Karl's answer:

  • Create a background layer. In it, draw a large rectangle of the desired background color.

  • Lock the layer to avoid selecting the background of the background of the rectangle.

I wrote a function request for this in the Inkscape error tracker. This is currently impossible, we will see if it will be implemented in the future.

see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1100755

EDIT July 2016: This feature has been added and should be included in the upcoming version 0.92.

I use a large square, rectangle, oval, etc. (no matter what covers and hides the image completely), set the color to something ugly, which obviously is not part of the image design, and then lower the shape to the bottom so every other object is above it. Everything that is transparent will show an ugly color. When I finished editing, I will delete the ugly color shape that I created. Of course, this is a workaround, but it is relatively painless and easy to do.

Like Inkscape 0.92, you can select a checkerboard pattern in the background.

Go to the document properties and check this box:
