GitHub Wiki

Is there a wiki that installs using the GitHub repository support directories? Our wiki is cluttered with pages, and we are looking for a way to organize them better.

We tried pulling out the repo, creating local directories, and moving things, but when they got back, the wiki didn't pick up the change.

I had the same problem, and I tried options for what you tried. Nothing's stuck. GitHub asked about this and received a response that essentially said "No, but we will let developers understand that people are interested in this feature."

So, the short answer is “No,” and the long answer is “No, but maybe in the future.”

In fact, it seems that github has recently added directory support.

I was able to do the following:

  • Move the existing markup file to a new directory.
  • Create a new markup file in an existing directory (created in the previous step).
  • Create a new markup file in a new directory.

In all cases, the existing pages were still there, and new pages were added.

The only limitation that remains is that your file names must be unique. If you have more than one file with the same name, only one of them will appear on the wiki (I'm not sure which ..).

The github wiki (aka Gollum ) uses directories, but not as you might expect.

The documentation on the Gollum wiki may use some work, but this is what I found out mainly through testing.

  • All files appear in the wiki root folder no matter where they are located in the repo.
  • _Header , _Footer and _Sidebar files are in the folder, but are inherited if there is no in the child folder.
  • File links may refer to the source file (save your files with your content).

So, if you need directories for the namespace, you're out of luck. Consider using an NS-Page schema for a namespace.

This is not an ideal solution, but a workaround would be to create a custom sidebar where you create a table of contents with links to your pages. I believe that this is better than folders, as it allows you to have a link to one page in several hierarchies.

In fact, there is still a limitation. Yes, you can add 1 level (so 1 subfolder). But this! I reorganized all the documentation by creating several levels of subfolders for the organization, but that was not good.

sigh

I have to say: I am shocked by this Goll. I am surprised that Github even picked it up.
