Ruby-debug installation error: failed to create native gem extension

I run 1.9.2 with rails 3.

I am using rvm.

The problem here may be that the installation of the script goes away to get the Ruby header files over the Internet (to build the gem debugger), but does not find them for a certain level of the Ruby patch, again after. This is what happens on the output line.

 Looking for http://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/1.9/ruby-1.9.2-p14.tar.gz and all I got was a 404! (URI::NotFoundError)

As a solution, you can point to your local copy of the Ruby source that rvm already used to create ruby on your computer. Here goes ...

 gem install ruby-debug19 -- --with-ruby-include=$rvm_path/src/ruby-1.9.2-head/

Many thanks to Dirk at the following link that helped solve this problem.

ruby debug stone is not compatible with Ruby 1.9.2. You need to use the ruby-debug19 gem

So change your gemfile to use this

 gem 'ruby-debug19'

In your gemfile, change the ruby-debug line to this:

 gem 'ruby-debug19', :require => 'ruby-debug'

My source is http://dirk.net/2010/04/17/ruby-debug-with-ruby-19x-and-rails-3-on-rvm/

I had a similar problem (a problem with compiling my own extensions), working in vpn behind a firewall and having a given http_proxy environment variable. The installer of this case could not get the ruby tar file. I closed vpn and disabled the http_proxy variable and then successfully installed gem. I think -with-ruby-include is an alternative.

Installing gem ruby-debug-base19x also failed due to connection issues using the cntlm proxy, and "-with-ruby-include" did not work for me. Installing gem without a proxy worked smoothly.

ruby debugging stone is not compatible with Ruby 1.9.2 and later. replace the gem 'ruby-debug19' with the following you need to use the ruby-debug19 gem so change your gemfile to use this

For windows, search ruby dir for vm_core.h and then use this directory as your include path. For me it

 gem install ruby-debug-base19 -- --with-ruby-include=C:\JRuby\lib\native\include\ruby-1.9.3-p392

Then I had to check:

 C:\JRuby\lib\ruby\gems\shared\gems\linecache19-0.5.12\ext\trace_nums\gem_make.out

and move ruby /ruby.h to the include directory above.

Now I have one more error, fix it a bit later ...

just use this:

 [sudo] gem update --system

The solution comes from http://rubygems.org/pages/download
