What is the maximum number of subdirectories allowed in Ext4?

I am considering moving my ext3 partition to ext4 to overcome the limitation of the 32000 subdirectory. I saw two different numbers thrown around the ext4 limits, as from reputable sources:

Limit 64,000:

What is the correct answer and how can I determine the correct answer from ext4 source?

The limit is 64000. Until you enable the dir_nlink file system function flag
