CSS - maximum z-index value

Is there a maximum / minimum value for the z-index CSS property?
Do different browsers have different maximum / minimum accepted values?
How will the browser handle high / low value?

It seemed to me that I read somewhere about the maximum value of z-index . Maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks in advance!

Incredibly, this is the value of chrome max z-index.

 .css('z-index', '99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999').css('z-index')

If you add another digit, it will go to 1e+308

Newer information found since 2012:

"Chrome, Opera, and IE9 seem to be the only browsers that support a true infinite value for the z-index, while Firefox still uses 2147483647, and Safari now engages in some strange rounding behavior after the number exceeds 16 digits in length."
