How can an Android app handle ringtones without permission?

I have Android 5.0.1 (API level 21).

I am using NewRelic application version 1.9.3 (if necessary, I can provide this apk version).

From version 1.9.4, their application began to require access to READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE , as well as permissions for "Photos / Media / Files".

When I contacted the company to explain this permission requirement, they stated that it was β€œrequired” to access my tunes / notifications stored on an external SD card. However, I always saved my own ringtones and notifications on my removable SD card, and I could always use them in this application without asking for this permission.

How is it possible that this application can access my tunes without permission? Or is the company's explanation for this permission not justified?

Most likely, this happened with the fact that with MarshMallow Android updated their creative permissions for their applications. Therefore, probably, before this, a new relic could automatically receive ringtones with a different resolution.

With the latest updates, the app needs to access external storage in order to get ringtones, which seems legal to me. Therefore, the company's explanation is correct.

This is what NewRelic mixed up, or your phone should be in version 6.0. since up to 5.0 permissions are granted during installation, only after 6.0, when the application accesses a dangerous permission (which contains personal data of users), which users must approve.

In this case, if you are at 5. *, NewRelic should write a specific API code for the lower and higher marshmallows, as described here. http://developer.android.com/training/permissions/requesting.html
