Django Makemigrations and Migrate are slow

Question

Since the project was upgraded to Django 1.8 (more precisely, 1.8.7) from Django 1.7.6, mamemigrations and migrate have been very slow (it takes about 15 minutes to migrate about 10 migrations).

When I do "manage.py migrate", 90% of the time does "Rendering model states ..." before giving me "DONE".

Does anyone know why this is happening?

This is a known issue with Django 1.8, unfortunately the only solution supported by django is the update.
